Online Assessments the Future of Global Learning

The Australian Government remains committed to ensuring there is a national approach to online assessment, including a move to deliver the National Assessment Program (NAP) online. Online assessment offers significant benefits including the potential to provide a more accurate measurement of student achievement, increased accessibility, and faster results. It can also provide teachers with vital diagnostic information that they can use in the classroom. Some of these benefits are already starting to be realised through ‘Improve’ – an online assessment tool available to all Australian teachers. Work is underway to develop a new national assessment system to support the delivery of NAPLAN online, and potentially state and territory online assessments, as well as innovative classroom assessments. A comprehensive research programme is also being undertaken by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to investigate student performance and measure impacts of delivering NAPLANonline. Education Services Australia (ESA) and ACARA are working with the Australian Government Department of Education to deliver this programme of work, in consultation with state and territory and non-government education authorities. Survey reveals growing demand for customised e-learning and video content

L&D teams are increasingly buying-in ready-made learning resources, rather than creating their own, according to an annual survey by Video Arts, which reveals an upsurge in the use of off-the-shelf e-learning and video content. The poll conducted in June, surveyed 400 learning and development professionals about how they deliver training and their plans for the future. Rogue training providers beware

Anyone with a complaint or query about the VET sector now has one number to call – 13 38 73. The hotline, recently launched by the Assistant Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, directs complaints to the appropriate Commonwealth, state or territory organisation for help. “This new one-stop-shop hotline, a joint initiative with state and territory governments, will make it easier to stop the exploitation of students, businesses and taxpayer funding,” Senator Birmingham said. The hotline also allows the Department of Education and Training to analyse complaint trends in order to quickly identify what further action and improvements are needed. New standards to combat rogue training brokers and protect prospective students from unscrupulous marketing practices, come into force from today. Assistant Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham said the Australian Government is taking decisive and coordinated action to stop the exploitation of students. “Stories abound of people being stopped on the street and offered incentives including cash payments to sign-up for a course they don’t need,” Senator Birmingham said. “Often prospective students aren’t given the full story and sign-up to student loans worth thousands of dollars that need to be repaid later.” “The Government is taking firm action to crack down on unscrupulous and misleading behaviour by some training providers and brokers.” “Under the new standards, training providers and their brokers must be upfront with students and provide clear information about any VET-FEE HELP loans, state entitlements and subsidy arrangements that they sign up to.” “The standards also stipulate that training providers are ultimately responsible for services delivered by brokers on their behalf, ensuring that the buck stops with training providers.” “As the new minister I intend to do all possible to ensure training is of the highest quality so that students and potential employers can…
